The Root raises the profile of black voices in mainstream media and engages anyone interested in black culture around the world. It is owned by the Washington Post Company.
The Root 100 honorees are not only high achievers, they are people who use their influence to shape the world and make it a better place,” says Sheryl Salomon, Managing Editor of The Root. “Those who appear on our 2012 list have been especially active in this regard during the past year.”

Ranked honoree scores are determined by a mathematical formula that weighs elements of influence, such as reach, substance of work, media and internet mentions, and number of twitter followers.
Outdoor Afro is so very grateful and honored, and consider this recognition a benefit for the entire outdoor recreation, retail, and education fields!
